The Rich History of the Rolex GMT-Master II Watch

The Rolex GMT-Master was added to the Rolex production capacity in 1954. Although it featured a versatile appearance, it was actually designed in collaboration with Pan Am Airways to be perfect for a pilot on an airborne adventure. Not only did the watch show a first time zone, but it also showed a second time zone at the same time. It featured a bidirectional rotatable bezel and other fine Rolex collection features.

The original GMT-Master was actually still in production all the way until 1999. However, the Rolex GMT-Master II was released long before then, and the two were actually produced side-by-side for years.

The Rolex GMT-Master II actually hit the scene in the 1980s. Rolex released this watch to look incredibly similar to the original GMT-Master. However, in terms of the movement, there were some small differences. Most notably, the second version of these professional watches had an independent hour hand. This allowed users to change the time zone of their watch without having to pause movement of the minute or second hand. These small technical adjustments meant that the Rolex GMT-Master II was even more precise, time-wise. As you can imagine, this type of thing is quite important for pilots and navigators, who were kept in mind when the watch was designed and produced.

Various changes and improvements have been made to the Rolex GMT-Master II over the years. For example, when the GMT-Master was first released, it could only be purchased in stainless steel, rather than other precious metals like white gold, yellow gold, or Everose gold. This changed later, though. Additionally, depending on the specific model that you're interested in, you can buy a GMT-Master II with either an Oyster bracelet or Jubilee bracelet.

The first most updated Rolex GMT-Master II that was released was released in 2005. Both technical and cosmetic changes were made to the Rolex GMT-Master II this year. One of the most noticeable differences is the fact that the case size is larger, since larger watches were becoming more popular around this time. A new, improved, and more luxurious bracelet was added, making this watch both a statement piece and a functional work watch. Additionally, from a technical standpoint, a Parachrom hairspring and larger Triplock crown were both added.

Over the years, the movement has been changed in newer models of the Rolex GMT-Master II. Additionally, a ceramic bezel and two-colour Cerachrom bezel insert were added later to replace the original aluminum insert. This was done to make the watch more scratch-resistant and durable. The first model with the two-tone bezel insert featured a blue and black bezel. More colors were added later. The Rolex GMT-Master II is still in production today, and it still features a Cerachrom insert and bezel.

What Are the Different Models of the Rolex GMT-Master II?

Not only are there both Rolex GMT-Master and Rolex GMT-Master II watches, but there are multiple models and styles of each. Some of the more modern GMT-Master II watches have earned nicknames, related to the two-colored bezel insert on each watch.

For example, the GMT-Master II with a blue and black ceramic bezel insert is known as the "Batman" model among many watch enthusiasts. An unexpected version of the Oyster Perpetual GMT-Master II was released in 2014, and it earned the nickname of the "Pepsi" model. This is because of its red and blue color scheme, and it was unexpected because at first, Rolex was not able to produce red ceramic inserts. Once the "Pepsi" model was released, it was immediately very popular, and many people headed to their official dealer to purchase one immediately. The "Root Beer" model of the GMT-Master II is another popular model. Its color scheme is black and brown.

Each model of the GMT-Master II, from the original model to the newest one, is valuable. Bring it to Greenbrier Pawn, and we'll check out the model and condition. No matter which Rolex GMT-Master II you have, we will pay you what your watch is worth, on the spot!

How Much Can You Get When You Sell Your Rolex GMT-Master II in Chesapeake?

When selling your Rolex GMT-Master II, it's natural to want to get paid as much for it as possible. You might have never sold a luxury watch before, but rest assured, we'll make you a fair cash offer based on the retail price of your newer or original GMT-Master II watch.

As is the case with other lines from Rolex, some models of the GMT-Master II are more luxurious and coveted than others. Naturally, we will be able to pay you more for these watches, since we will be able to get more for them when we put them up for sale. However, even the more common models of the GMT-Master II can fetch higher prices at Greenbrier Pawn.

In addition to checking both the authenticity and model of your GMT-Master II, we will also pay attention to its condition. Rolex GMT-Master II watches that are still in like-new condition fetch even higher prices. Just because your watch is showing signs of wear or needs to be repaired does not mean that we won't make an offer on it, however. Regardless, bring it in so we can look at it!

Also, remember that there are certain things you can do to make sure you get paid as much as possible for your Rolex GMT-Master II. First of all, bringing it to Greenbrier Pawn is a sure-fire way to get a higher offer on your watch. We always pay top dollar, and we will not try to lowball you like some luxury watch buyers and pawn shops will.

Additionally, if you have any of the original paperwork that you received when you first purchased your watch, don't forget to bring it with you, too! Many people don't realize that having the original box, manual, and so on can actually help them get paid more for their Rolex GMT-Master II. However, having these things can help you get a higher offer. If you don't have them, though, don't sweat it; we'll still be able to authenticate your watch, and we'll still buy it with or without the original box and documentation.

If you're curious about how much you will be offered for your watch, you can get an answer with ease. We unfortunately will not be able to value your watch without seeing it, although you can call us ahead if you have any other questions. If you want to get a cash offer, you'll need to come in with your watch. One of our experienced associates will take the time right then to value your watch. In no time, you'll be given a cash offer, and there's absolutely no obligation to accept it. Once you hear how much we pay for these fine watches, though, we think you might just be ready to make a deal!
